Italy introduces national rules for compostable packaging
Italy has introduced national rules requiring certain categories of single-use plastic packaging to be biodegradable and compostable, building on the flexibility provided under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
The new provisions cover, among others, pre-packaged fresh fruit and vegetables below 1.5 kg, certain food and beverage packaging used in the HORECA sector, individual condiment portions and selected single-use cosmetic and hygiene packaging used in accommodation establishments.
The measure is another example of how Member States are developing national provisions alongside the PPWR, highlighting the importance of monitoring national implementation and its implications for companies operating across the EU.
